COMPULSORY
BASIC TRAINING
|
|
|
Compulsory Basic
Training
must be
completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride
unaccompanied on the road.
The CBT gives you a basic understanding of
motorcycling and involves five elements:
Introduction
Practical
on-site training
Practical
on-site riding
Practical
on-road training
Practical
on-road riding (minimum
2 hours)
The
five elements have to be completed in sequence, although the order of
the exercises within the element can be varied. You will move
on
to each element when your Instructor is satified you have learnt the
necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic
level.
Following satisfactory
completion of your CBT, you
will be
issued with a DL196 certificate which has a life of 2 years.
This certificate will validate your licence and allow you to
ride on L-plates, but will not
allow you to carry a pillion passenger or ride on a motorway.
|
|
|
If you don't pass a
motorcycle test within the two year period, you will need to
re-take the CBT course.

A
moped is defined as a machine
with a maximum speed not
exceeding 31 mph, with an engine capacity not exceeding 49cc.
If
you want to ride a moped and gained a full car licence (Category B) prior
to February
2001, you may
ride on the road without having to complete a CBT, but it
would be
very worth while doing so.
On
a full or provisional UK car
licence, a CBT certificate (DL196)
allows you to ride a
motorcycle
up to a maximum of 125cc, either automatic or manual, with a
power output of no greater than 14.6 bhp (11 kW), providing
you
have valid provisional motorcycle entitlement (Category A) on your
licence.
If
you do not have provisional motorcycle entitlement on your
licence and
only have provisional moped entitlement (Category P)
then you may only
ride a moped
once you have completed CBT.
At
age 16,
you will only have
provisional moped entitlement.
If
you are
not sure about your
licence and require further
information, please call the DVLA on
0300 790 6801.
|
|
Your
initial training is conducted on our off road site, where you
will
be taught essential riding skills and safely practice well away from
the pressure of the public road.
A
maximum ratio of 2 students to 1 instructor is observed during all on
road sessions. During these sessions you will be in constant radio
contact with your instructor.
